Hey Friends
I hope your week is going smoothly. It’s all systems go right now. #BetweenTheLinesPodcast. Episode 2 has just landed with the esteemed Yorkshire singer Låpsley.
Låpsley reminds me of Soundcloud and Radio 1 circa 2014. I vividly remember the wave of excitement as tastemakers scrambled to be the first to play her on the airwaves, which then led to her signing with XL Records. I adored her debut album “Long Way Home” and listening back transported me fondly to that time in my life, being between the ages of 24-26. Enjoying everything about the music industry for the first time.
I met Låpsley briefly in that era, and I wasn’t sure if she was shy, reserved or aloof. But 10 years on, for this podcast, I had the chance to sit down with her and as she relayed the reality of that time, I was shocked and saddened that I had pre-judged her from one interaction. In the face of success and sharing beautiful music, she was an 18-year-old plucked from her bedroom into an adult, often male-dominated environment.
“Church” begins with Låpsley reflects on going from the loudest in the classroom to the early days of her career and losing her voice. She speaks about the contrast between her idyllic childhood and the notion that one day she would experience gender equality, to the actuality of what she experiences as a woman in the present day. Tangent FM as I like to think of the podcast also led us to talk about Polyamary, Låpsley’s time as a doula & family dynamics.
There is so much to take in from this conversation, and I’m sure you will agree the Låpsley you meet today is strong, funny, self-assured, smart and about her bizness! No artist’s journey is linear and success is subjective, but it can be so magical to bask in the rays of someone who has stepped into their power and is taking on the world in their way.
Enjoy my friends, as always, please feel free to like, share comment.
